As she prepares herself back stage to take centre stage at Catch a fire International Reggae festival, Carol Dimakatso Motlhaodi a loving mother and wife, transforms herself to a Reggae Military commander known as Dimahr, ready to Command the crowd and give them a mesmerising performance. In the field of South African Reggae entertainment, one name shines brighter than the rest. Born and raised in Soweto, having her father taken from her from a young age due to apartheid that divided South Africans, this vibrant artists was determined to make her mark in the musical world and this her story of perseverance and the power of music to command the masses. Dimahr already working in the music industry, but behind the scenes as the owner of a recording label, as well as managing artists such as Botanist Meesta Lamington, her now partner. Together with her managerial and communications and Botanists Meesta Lamington production and musical skill, the couple combined forces to establish Concrete Jungle Studios and Publishing, a Reggae and Dancehall recording label, on her way to making her mark in the Reggae entertainment industry in a big way. Inspired by Meesta Lamington to pursue the art of Reggae she recalls her first time on stage, “Gradually backing Botanist on stage, I remember how scared I was... it felt like I was stepping out of my comfort zone”, honing her craft tirelessly, performing at local gigs and immersing herself in the reggae culture. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, Dimahr remained steadfast in her pursuit of success. Her unwavering dedication caught the attention of industry insiders, and soon she was making waves on the Mzansi Reggae scene receiving 3 nominations, 2 nomination from the Basadi in Music Awards for best Reggae artist and best newcomer and another nomination from the MAMA, “This was confirmation that I am on the right path, I was over the moon and this encouraged me to want to do more in the reggae industry” she states, her soul-stirring vocals captivates even the largest of crowds. But it was her breakout hit single, “Uptown girl”, that catapulted her to the face of Mzansi Reggae. With its infectious dancehall style rhythm and cutthroat lyrics, the song struck a chord with audiences across South Africa, cementing Dimahr’s status as a rising Reggae star. Fuelled by the success of her debut single, Dimahr embarked on a journey that would see her conquer not only the local music scene but also the international stage. Her Debut Album “The Truth” made her a household name in the Reggae industry with audiences as far Germany and Trinidad giving the album a stand out praise, “firstly, the album cover that’s me, I wanted to be my authentic self, I could have been half naked, but I didn’t want that, that’s not Dimahr” she states talking about her experience of recording the debut album, “The process of the album was very emotional, the entire process made it real, I was also blessed enough to have a project produced all the way from Germany by Ras Victory the CEO of Victory Nations” she adds. Her song titled “Spirituality” from the album “The Truth” was an instant hit and captured the hearts of all Rastas and none Rastas alike. From being Botanist back up vocalist to now headlining Mzansi Reggae shows, she was here to make a clear statement. The first show where she grabbed the audiences attention was at Mzansi Reggae Summer Festival against GBV hosted by Lioness Productions which was held last year the 9th Of December in Soweto Lebo’s backpackers, Dimahr came on stage wearing camouflage like a Military soldier ready to go to war, “I’m all about war on stage, strictly business and also I wanted to wear something made by my fellow Rasta Brother Jabulane King Yellowman” she states, describing her choice in wardrobe for the show. As she gave me tune after tune each song was carefully planned out making sure she starts her performance with some Roots and ending her performance with an electrifying dancehall performance, “I loved that performance so much, it felt like electricity piercing throughout my body” she recalls. From taking over the stage, to taking the Rasta fashion scene, Dimahr wanted to make sure that fans knew that she not just a Rasta through her lyrical skills and music, but that she’s Rasta even through the clothes that she wears making sure whether on or off stage she is always dressed by a Rasta designer, “The fact that I can empower another and a fellow Rasta as that gives me so much joy, also I’m a Rasta, so why not... There is so much talent in the Rasta community that the world needs to see and it makes me proud to be the one to display all these designers” as she recalls the time she was dressed by King Yellowman for Mzansi Reggae Festival and also being dressed by GullyGodx for her performance for Catch a fire. “After performing at BlaqMary Goddess Tribe Fashion Show wearing a piece by Siyathokoza Mada kush Kreations that’s when the doors widen up, a lot of Rasta designers wanted to dress me, not because I’m a Reggae artist, but they really loved how I look and complimented my skin tone and my body, it was a boost of confidence” she adds. In the beginning of 2024 she dropped her 2nd studio album under Concrete Jungle Studios and Publishing titled “Proof of life”, cementing her status as a lyrical Goddess giving us cohesive lyrics and catchy beats, “Proof of life is more of a testimony to my life, I’ve been through so much and I’m just so thankful to still be alive and healthy... Proof of life is about my personal journey, my personal experience, pain, losses and healing” she states On the 9th of March 2024 she headlined one of the biggest Reggae events in Africa, Catch a fire International Reggae Festival hosted by Lioness Productions, as she opened up for Pressure Busspipe an international Reggae artists from the Virgin Islands, dressed by GullyGodx. She captivated the audiences with her powerful performance giving them the fire she oozed from her mouth. Yet amidst the glitz and glamour of fame, Dimahr remains grounded in her roots, using her platform to advocate for social change and upliftment in her community. Through her music, she champions causes close to her heart, from gender equality to environmental sustainability, inspiring fans around the world to join her in making a difference. As she continues to evolve as an artist and a woman, Dimahr remains a warrior on stage and empowerment for aspiring musicians everywhere.
